I Work for a “Self-Publishing Company”

Hillcrest Media Group

And those are words I never thought I’d say.

I’m a DIY author. So working for a company that helps authors self-publish their books seemed like an odd choice, especially in light of companies like Author Solutions and its subsidiaries.

(*coughs* They’re scammy. *coughs*)

But when I saw the listing for content manager at Hillcrest Media Group (Mill City Press being its “self-publishing company”), I was intrigued.

Because after working a temp job downtown Minneapolis earlier this year, I realized that I was tired of working at home and wanted to be around people — not that I’ll give up writing (I won’t), but I’m happier working full-time and keeping my authoring as a side job. More productive too, but that’s another post for another time.

I was intrigued by Hillcrest because it sounded like I’d be doing what I’d been doing for The Path of Least Revision full-time. It gave me the best of both worlds: working full-time downtown and staying in an industry I love.

Sometimes life happens exactly as it’s supposed to.

Over the years I’ve learned that life may not always go your way… but it’s usually setting up you up for something bigger and better. I walked into the Hillcrest office and was greeted by a receptionist desk made of books and I had the first inkling that I was in the right spot.

The interview proved it.

Because Hillcrest isn’t a scammy self-publishing company. They’re a company dedicated to helping authors publish their books, in whatever way they can help. They’ve got some crazy awesome tools and resources coming for DIY authors. They’re set to be at the forefront of changing the perception of self-published books.

And I get to be part of it.

The thing is, there are certain types of authors who are perfect for Mill City Press. And that’s not something I knew before I started. So while I’ll likely always be a DIY author, I see the value in a reputable self-publishing company. I’m glad I took a chance and answered a LinkedIn job posting.

I wake up every morning excited to go to work.

I get to live, breathe, and talk books all day. I can be me in ways that have been impossible in previous jobs. I talk BOOKS and MARKETING and EVERYTHING I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT. All day. It’s glorious.

And I can’t wait to share with you what’s coming up.
